Police Capture Farm Animals After Brief Hoof Pursuit

A black cow, two sheep and a handful of goats led police on a foot pursuit in Fishkill, New York, before every member of the woolly and horned gang was taken into custody and returned to the barn.

The livestock breakout unfolded on Sunday, August 16, when the Town of Fishkill Police Department received the sort of assignment that may not occupy quite enough time at the academy: rounding up farm animals roaming around town.

Motorists in the Hudson Valley may have found themselves slowing down near Van Wyck Lake Road that morning and wondering whether they had really just seen an assorted agricultural delegation wandering freely beside the road. They had.

Police announced the unusual sighting on social media, issuing what amounted to a lost-property notice for several items of property capable of walking away under their own power.

“If you are missing a black cow, a couple of sheep and a handful of goats, our officers saw them this morning near Van Wyck Lake Road,” the department wrote.

“If they are yours, give our desk a call and we can fill you in on the rest of the details.”

Precisely how the group escaped was not disclosed, nor was it clear whether the cow had organised the operation or was merely providing muscle. What was apparent was that the animals had got far enough from home to attract police attention and require an actual pursuit on foot. This was presumably fairer than attempting to outmanoeuvre goats in a patrol car.

The department’s Facebook post promptly drew assistance of varying practical value. Some commenters called dibs on particular animals shown in the police photograph, while others suggested nearby farms that might be missing four-legged residents. One local also supplied a creative parody news report offering a play-by-play of the escape.

By the evening, however, the great farm escape of 2026 was over. In an update issued at 5.30pm, Fishkill police confirmed that the entire group had been apprehended without any reported harm.

“Update as of 5:30 pm: After a bit of a foot pursuit, all subjects were taken into custody and are now safely back in their barn,” the department said.

“Thanks to all the citizens who helped get these guys back home!”

No lawyers were reported at the scene, and the suspects appear to have declined to make any public statement. Their immediate future involves remaining safely in the barn, while Fishkill’s officers return to the more conventional parts of police work, at least until the next resident with hooves decides to test the perimeter.
