New York Elects a Spare Mayor

New York’s newly selected spare mayor wore a New York Knicks jersey underneath his suit, collected $100 and immediately began taking selfies with his constituents.

Amadeo Fusca was crowned the winner of a Mayor Zohran Mamdani look-alike contest near Washington Square Park on Sunday, August 30, after hundreds of people gathered to inspect nine men and decide which one most closely resembled the real occupant of City Hall.

Fusca emerged as the crowd favourite by combining several important qualifications for municipal office: a similar haircut, Mamdani-style facial hair and formalwear with the jersey of the NBA champion Knicks concealed beneath it. The result was apparently close enough for the assembled New Yorkers, who awarded him the prize and then queued for pictures with their freshly elected visual approximation.

The contest was sponsored by the social media app Sonder. It drew nine participants, many of whom had facial hair resembling Mamdani’s and arrived dressed in assorted versions of his style. Among the clothing choices was the sort of brown suit Mamdani wore while campaigning, because democracy is built on policies, participation and, occasionally, finding a jacket in roughly the correct shade.

The actual Mamdani, a democratic socialist, took office as New York City mayor in January. He has built a large following on social media and among younger residents, making him recognisable enough to support an entire public competition devoted to locating another one of him.

His agenda as mayor centres on redirecting the power of government towards helping New York’s struggling working class. His double’s immediate programme was more modest: accept the $100 prize, stand among the crowd and take selfies.

Hundreds of spectators served as judges at the gathering near the city’s popular Washington Square Park. They ultimately settled on Fusca, whose combination of hair, facial hair, suit and Knicks allegiance carried the day against eight rival Mamdanis.

There was no indication that the contest conferred any official authority, access to City Hall or responsibility for the municipal budget. Fusca left with his cash prize and the public recognition of being the man whom a Sunday crowd thought looked most like the mayor. Mamdani, meanwhile, remains mayor, leaving New York with one officeholder and one publicly approved emergency likeness.
