Car Salesman Upgraded to Prince After DNA Inspection

A 26-year-old former car salesman has received the sort of upgrade rarely found in a dealership: a DNA test has turned him into a Belgian prince.

Clément Vandenkerckhove was confirmed as the biological son of Prince Laurent, the younger brother of Belgium’s King Philippe. Instead of a new set of keys and an extended warranty, the result brought him a royal father, a title and a revised family tree.

Clément’s mother is Wendy Van Wanten, a Flemish singer. Prince Laurent formally recognised Clément as his son during a low-key ceremony at a town hall around six months before the news was reported on 23 August 2026.

The setting was notably restrained for an event in which a former car salesman became the King’s nephew. There was no grand palace announcement or elaborate public pageant. The recognition was instead handled through the useful Belgian combination of a DNA test, a town hall and the civil registry.

Once the recognition was registered with Belgium’s civil authorities, Clément officially joined Prince Laurent’s immediate family. He now has equal inheritance rights to Laurent’s private estate alongside the prince’s three other children: Princess Louise, Prince Nicolas and Prince Aymeric.

That makes the three royals Clément’s half-siblings and King Philippe his uncle. Prince Laurent’s formal acknowledgement settled the question of Clément’s biological parentage and placed the relationship on the official record.

For Clément, the result is a particularly dramatic change of status at an age when most former salesmen might consider a new job title sufficiently exciting. His own new title happens to be prince, obtained not through marriage, conquest or an unusually aggressive promotion round, but through genetic inspection.

The case has now concluded with formal recognition rather than merely a private test result. Clément’s place in the family is registered, and his rights concerning Prince Laurent’s private estate match those of Princess Louise, Prince Nicolas and Prince Aymeric.

What happens next is therefore less a hunt for royal parentage than the ordinary, if rather elevated, business of being an acknowledged son. At 26, Clément has gone from selling cars to belonging to Belgium’s royal family, proving that every so often the surprise upgrade is not offered to the customer.
