Alligator Walks Into Bagel Shop, Orders Everything

A three-foot alligator entered a North Carolina bagel shop through the back door. It then strolled through the store as if patiently searching for the smoked salmon.

A three-foot alligator wandered into a North Carolina bagel shop through the back door, crossed the kitchen and made its way to the front counter, apparently unwilling to queue outside like everyone else.

The unexpected customer was caught on surveillance cameras at Bagel Dock Express in Southport. Footage shared by the shop shows the baby alligator taking advantage of a back door that had been left open, then strolling through the premises with the unhurried confidence of a creature inspecting the day’s selection.

Its route took it through the kitchen and into the front of the store, where owner Jesse Driscoll encountered it at the counter. Driscoll briefly panicked, which is a reasonable response when a customer arrives with that many teeth and no obvious means of payment, before calling 911.

“Never in a million years did I think I’d see an alligator,” Driscoll told WWAY-TV.

Fortunately, the shop was not open at the time of the incident, so there were no customers present to find themselves unexpectedly behind an alligator in the bagel queue. There was also no need to establish whether the animal wanted its order toasted, filled or simply handed over at once.

The alligator’s visit ended without injury or further commotion. Southport Police and Animal Protective Services attended the scene and carted the reptile away. No one was hurt, the premises survived, and the visitor did not succeed in placing an order.

The shop later treated the intrusion as a particularly enthusiastic piece of customer outreach.

“Apparently, word of our fresh bagels has made its way into the swamp,” Bagel Dock Express said in a Facebook post. “No injuries, no drama... just one very unusual customer! Fresh bagels. Wild experiences.”

The video, released around Nov. 3, preserves the full journey: in through the open rear door, through the working part of the shop and up to the counter, where the normal relationship between proprietor and hungry walk-in became briefly difficult to maintain.

With police and animal officers having removed the baby alligator, Bagel Dock Express can return to serving customers whose breakfast preferences are easier to establish. The back door, meanwhile, has demonstrated that it is not merely a staff entrance but an invitation the local wildlife may take quite literally.
